What is an SBA microloan?

The SBA lends money to approved nonprofit intermediaries, often community development organizations, and they lend it on to small businesses in amounts up to $50,000. The intermediary sets the rate within SBA limits, decides who qualifies and services the loan. Most also require or offer business training and counseling, which is part of the point.

Funds can be used for working capital, inventory, supplies, furniture, fixtures and equipment. They cannot be used to buy real estate or to refinance existing debt. For owners who have been told they are too new or too small, this is the most realistic startup business loan that exists.

Who qualifies for an SBA microloan?

The bar is lower than any bank's. Intermediaries typically want a written business plan, owner credit of roughly 575 to 620 or higher, some of your own money in the business, and a reasonable explanation of how the loan will be repaid. Many have a mission focus: women, veterans, minority owners, rural businesses or specific neighborhoods.

  • Startups qualify. Pre revenue businesses are common, as long as the plan shows how revenue will cover the payment.
  • Declined most often: owners with a recent bankruptcy, unpaid child support or federal taxes, businesses outside the intermediary's region, and anyone who skips the required training.
  • If your credit is the issue, bad credit options explains what the intermediaries look for beyond the score.

What does an SBA microloan really cost?

A typical example: you borrow $25,000 over five years at 10%. The payment is about $530 a month and total interest about $6,900 over the term. Add a closing fee of 2% to 3%, roughly $500 to $750, often deducted from the proceeds. That is far cheaper than any online product available to a business under a year old, where 30% to 80% APR is normal.

The hidden cost is time. Required training can mean several evening sessions before you are approved, and intermediaries move at a nonprofit pace. For owners who need money in a week, that is a real cost; for everyone else it is the best priced small loan they will see. Compare options in the business loan calculator.

How do you qualify, and what documents do you need?

Expect a business plan with a 12 month cash flow projection, personal and business tax returns if they exist, three months of bank statements, a personal financial statement, and proof of any money you have already put in. Existing businesses add year to date financials and a debt schedule. Most intermediaries have their own application and will walk you through it.

Our document checklist covers the standard items, and the first time borrower guide explains how to write the projection lenders actually read. A plan that shows the payment coming out of realistic revenue, not hoped for revenue, is what gets approved.

How long does an SBA microloan take?

Typically two to six weeks from a complete application to funding. Intermediaries underwrite by hand and often meet with you, which is slower than an online lender but faster than a bank SBA loan. Required training can add weeks if sessions are scheduled monthly.

The fastest path is to contact the intermediary that covers your area before you apply, confirm you fit its mission and region, and arrive with the plan and projections done. If you need funds faster than that, a business credit card is usually the only cheaper option for a new business.

When should you choose something else?

Choose equipment financing if the purchase is a machine or vehicle, because the equipment secures the loan, approval takes days and amounts go far beyond $50,000. Choose an SBA 7(a) loan once you have two years of returns and need more than $50,000; the rate is similar and the term can be longer.

Skip the microloan if you need money inside two weeks or you are unwilling to sit through training. And do not take one to cover an existing cash shortfall; intermediaries fund plans, and a business that is already behind on bills rarely gets through underwriting.
