Can you get a business loan after the bank says no?
Yes, in most cases. Banks decline for a short list of reasons: under two years in business, credit below their cutoff, cash flow that does not cover the payment with a cushion, no collateral, an industry they avoid, or an amount outside their range. Only one of those, cash flow that truly cannot support any payment, is a reason every lender shares. The rest have a lender built for them.
In the US you are entitled to the specific reasons in writing within 30 days of a decline. Ask for the adverse action notice if it has not arrived. In Canada, ask your account manager directly. The reason is the map. Why loans get denied lists every common reason and its fix.
Which products will consider you, ranked by fit
Ranked by the reason for the decline:
- Declined for collateral or a thin cushion: an SBA 7(a) lender at a different bank or a credit union. The guarantee covers what your bank would not.
- Declined for time in business: online term loans and lines after one year, revenue based financing after six months.
- Declined for credit: equipment financing, factoring, revenue based financing and advances, which lend on the asset or the sales.
- Declined for industry: lenders that specialize in your trade; see the industry pages.
- Declined for amount: community lenders and SBA microloans for small requests, asset based lenders for large ones.
Applying once here matches on the reason.
Which products will decline you, so you stop wasting applications
Another bank with the same credit policy will decline you for the same reason, so applying to three more banks after a decline for time in business just adds inquiries. If the decline was for cash flow, meaning your profit after owner draws cannot cover any realistic payment, online lenders will decline too, and an advance will only make the shortfall worse. If the decline was for unpaid taxes or a recent bankruptcy, nearly everyone will decline until those are resolved.
Be wary of anyone who promises guaranteed approval after a bank decline. Real lenders underwrite. Business loan scams explains the warning signs, including upfront fees.

Apply nowHow to improve your odds in 30, 90 and 180 days
In 30 days: get the written reason, pull your credit reports, and rebuild the package. Many declines come with a weak package: missing year to date financials, no projections, an unexplained loss on the tax return. Add a one page summary that addresses the reason directly. Apply to the lenders built for your gap.
In 90 days: fix the stated reason where you can. Pay down cards to lift the score, bring taxes current, sign the lease extension, separate personal and business accounts. Three clean statements reset what online lenders see.
In 180 days: if you took expensive money in month one, refinance it as soon as a cheaper lender will have you. Go back to a bank, ideally with an SBA program, when you cross two years and 680. See how to get a business loan.
What will it cost compared with a standard borrower?
The bank that declined you would have charged 7% to 12% APR. An SBA lender that approves the same deal charges prime plus 3% to 6.5% plus a guarantee fee, which is close to bank pricing and the best outcome after a decline. A credit union or community lender is similar. Online term loans and lines run 10% to 40% APR. Equipment financing runs 8% to 20%. Factoring costs 1% to 4% per 30 days. Advances price at factor rates of 1.2 to 1.5.
So the premium ranges from almost nothing, if an SBA lender takes the deal, to three times or more, if the only open door is an advance. Compare offers on the same basis with APR versus factor rate.
