Can you get a business loan to pay a tax bill?
Yes, if the business has revenue and the bill is an income or sales tax balance that has not yet turned into a filed lien. Lenders see a tax bill as a known one time cost. Many will pay the tax authority directly at closing so the lien never happens. Once a lien is filed, most banks and online lenders decline, because the government's claim sits ahead of theirs.
Compare the loan with a payment plan. The IRS charges interest plus a monthly penalty on installment agreements, which together often work out below 10% a year, and the CRA charges prescribed interest. A plan is usually cheaper than a loan. Business loan rates explained helps you compare the two.
Which products will consider you, ranked by fit
Ranked by fit for a tax balance:
- A payment plan with the tax authority, not a loan, for balances you can clear within one to three years. Cheapest.
- A line of credit, if you have one, drawn to pay the bill and repaid over the next few months.
- A bank or online term loan over one to five years, with the lender paying the tax authority directly.
- A short term loan, one to three days to fund, for a balance that is about to become a lien.
- Equipment refinancing or a property cash out, borrowing against assets you own to clear a large balance at a lower rate.
Which products will decline you, so you stop wasting applications
Nearly every lender declines when payroll taxes are unpaid and no plan is in place. Withheld payroll taxes belong to the government, and the trust fund recovery penalty can reach the owner personally, so lenders treat it as a sign the business is already in trouble. Once any tax lien is filed, banks, SBA lenders and most online lenders decline until it is released or subordinated.
Advances will still fund you with a lien, at the highest price, and daily remittances on top of a payment plan is a common path to closure. Set up the plan first, then borrow if you need to. Why loans get denied covers what a lien does to every other application.

Apply nowHow to improve your odds in 30, 90 and 180 days
In 30 days: do not wait for the notice to escalate. Call the tax authority or apply online for an installment agreement, make the first payment, and get the confirmation in writing. If you would rather borrow, apply right away, because a lender can pay the balance at closing while the account is still just past due.
In 90 days: with a plan in place and payments showing on your statements, lenders treat the balance as ordinary debt.
In 180 days: set aside a fixed share of every deposit for tax, in a separate account, so the bill never surprises you again. If a lien was filed, request a release or a subordination once the plan is current. Business loan requirements shows the thresholds lenders use.
What will it cost compared with a standard borrower?
If you apply before a lien, you pay standard pricing: 7% to 15% APR on a bank term loan or line, 10% to 40% from online lenders, and 15% to 60% on a short term loan taken in a hurry. An IRS installment agreement, with interest and the failure to pay penalty combined, typically costs less than any of those, which is why the plan ranks first.
After a lien, the price jumps. The only open products are advances at factor rates of 1.3 to 1.5 and secured loans against equipment or property at 10% to 20%. A $50,000 tax balance that could have cost $3,000 in interest on a plan can cost $15,000 to $25,000 in advance fees. Run the comparison in the business loan calculator.
