What will lenders ask you for?

Every lender asks four things: how long you have been in business, how much revenue you make, what your personal credit looks like, and what the money is for. They verify the first two from bank statements and tax returns, not from your answers. They check the third with a credit pull. The fourth decides which product fits.

You will also sign a personal guarantee on almost any loan under $1 million, which is normal. Business loan requirements gives the typical bars by lender type, and the document checklist lists what to gather before you start.

Which products are easiest for a first time borrower?

A business credit card is the easiest first credit: approval is based on your personal credit and it starts a business credit file. A line of credit is the most useful first loan for most businesses because you only pay for what you draw. Equipment financing is easy to get because the equipment is the collateral.

An SBA loan is the cheapest option if you have two years of history and can wait one to three months; SBA microloans go to younger businesses in smaller amounts. Cash advances are the easiest of all to get, which is exactly why first time borrowers should be careful with them: expensive to carry and hard to leave.

How much should you ask for?

Ask for the amount the purpose needs plus a modest cushion, and no more than your cash flow can repay comfortably. Lenders size loans on your numbers anyway: online lenders typically cap at 10% to 20% of annual revenue, and banks size on cash flow using a DSCR of 1.25. Asking for far more than your file supports gets you declined.

Work out the payment before you apply. A $100,000 loan at 12% over three years costs about $3,320 a month; make sure that fits under your average monthly profit with room for a slow month. The business loan calculator shows the payment for any amount, rate and term.

What mistakes cost first time borrowers the most?

Applying everywhere at once: each separate application can mean a hard credit pull and a new set of document requests, and lenders see the inquiries. Taking the first offer, which is usually the fastest and most expensive one. Not converting a factor rate to an APR before comparing. Borrowing the maximum offered rather than what the purpose needs. Missing the prepayment clause.

Two more: taking a second cash advance to cover the first, which most lenders treat as a reason to decline you, and letting bank statements show overdrafts in the months before applying. Every one of these is avoidable with a week of preparation. Why loans get denied covers what lenders actually see.

What should you ask a lender before you sign?

Ask for the APR and the total payback, in writing. Ask what the payment is and how often it is taken: monthly, weekly or daily. Ask what happens if you pay early. Ask what collateral the lender takes and whether the lien is blanket or specific. Ask whether the guarantee is unlimited. Ask what fees are deducted from the proceeds.

If any answer is vague or the lender will not put it in writing, that is your answer. How to read a term sheet walks through each line of the offer, and business loan scams covers the offers to walk away from.

How does the process work from start to finish?

You apply, the lender reviews your documents and credit, it may ask for more items (stipulations), it issues an offer or term sheet, you accept, you sign closing documents, and funds arrive. Fast products do all of that in days; banks and SBA lenders take weeks to months. What happens after you submit explains each step.

The simplest way to start is one application that reaches lenders in every category, so you compare real offers instead of guessing which lender to try. You can do that here, free, or ask your AI assistant to prepare and submit the application for you through our MCP server; see the agents hub.
