What are the steps in the SBA loan process?
Seven; the first three are yours.
- Prequalify. A lender or this site checks eligibility, credit, time in business and rough debt coverage. One to three days.
- Gather documents. Three years of returns, year to date financials, a debt schedule, a personal financial statement per 20% owner, and a use of funds; see what you need to apply.
- Apply. The lender's application plus the SBA forms, typically Form 1919 for the business and Form 413 for each owner.
- Underwriting. A credit memo, plus an appraisal on property or a valuation on a business purchase.
- Approval. Preferred lenders approve in house; others send the file to the SBA, which typically answers in 5 to 10 business days.
- Closing. Insurance, lien filings, entity documents, proof of your cash injection, signatures.
- Funding. The lender disburses, often directly to sellers and creditors.
What are the SBA loan limits by program?
The well known maximums: $5 million for a 7(a) loan, $5 million for the SBA portion of a 504 or $5.5 million for small manufacturers and certain energy projects, $500,000 for SBA Express, and $50,000 for a microloan. A 504 project can be much larger than the limit, because the bank's first lien is not capped.
Two limits catch people. The SBA's total guaranteed exposure to one borrower and its affiliates across 7(a) loans is capped at $3.75 million. And there is no official minimum, but most 7(a) lenders will not write under $25,000 to $50,000; below that, microloans and Express loans fill the gap. In Canada, the CSBFP lends up to $1.15 million per borrower.
How long does it take to get an SBA loan?
Typically 30 to 90 days from a complete application to money for a 7(a), 45 to 120 for a 504, and two to six weeks for Express and microloans. By stage: prequalification one to three days, documents one to two weeks, underwriting two to four weeks, SBA approval up to two weeks for lenders without preferred status, closing two to four weeks. Property adds two to four weeks for the appraisal and environmental report; business purchases typically run 60 to 120 days.

Apply nowWhat slows an SBA file?
Missing pieces, in a predictable order:
- Tax returns not filed, or an unpaid federal tax balance not yet on a payment plan.
- Large deposits with no explanation, or a debt on your credit report but not on your debt schedule.
- Cash injection that cannot be traced to its source, or that was borrowed.
- Entity documents out of date or not matching the ownership on the forms.
- Seller financials that do not match the seller's tax returns.
- Insurance, flood determinations and life insurance ordered in the last week.
- Switching lenders midway, which restarts underwriting.
Each is fixable before you apply; why loans get denied covers what happens when it is not.
Which lenders make SBA loans, and does the choice matter?
Banks, credit unions, and nonbank lenders licensed by the SBA, and the choice matters. Lenders with preferred status approve in house, which removes the SBA review step and often saves two weeks. Each lender also has its own credit box: some specialize in business purchases, some in property, some in smaller loans scored largely on credit, and some will not touch startups or certain industries.
Our lender directory profiles SBA lenders such as Live Oak Bank, Ready Capital and Newity, with what each one looks for. Matching the file to the right lender on day one is most of what a good broker does, and it is what this site's application is built to do.
How does applying once reach SBA lenders?
You fill one application and it goes to the SBA lenders whose credit box fits your industry, size, purpose and credit, alongside conventional lenders. Offers come back to the same place so you can compare rate, fees and term. It is free for your business, and we are paid the same whichever lender you choose. Levr, the platform behind this site, has worked on 5,000+ business loans.
Or ask your AI assistant to apply for you through our MCP server: it reads your tax returns and bank statements, fills the application and the SBA forms, matches lenders and submits with your approval. Setup is on the agents hub. The SBA loans overview compares the four programs.
