> The exact sequence an agent should follow: scope the need, collect documents, autofill, fix gaps, match lenders, present the shortlist, confirm, submit, track offers. With what to say to the owner at each step.

This is the sequence that produces a complete, submittable file in one pass, with the owner in control at the two points that matter. Follow it in order. Skipping readiness or matching is the usual cause of a stalled application.

## Key facts
- **Steps:** Scope, collect, upload, autofill, review, readiness, match, present, confirm, submit, track
- **Owner confirmations:** Two: lender selection and submission
- **Typical elapsed time:** 20 to 40 minutes of owner time when documents are ready
- **Done looks like:** Deals created with the approved lenders, owner knows what to expect next

## Step 1. Scope the need before touching any tool

Ask four things: how much, what for, how soon, and what the business looks like (revenue, time in business, rough credit). Use the [eligibility page](https://businessloanbroker.ai/agents/eligibility/) to tell the owner which products will realistically consider them. If the ask is a personal loan or a broker use case, stop and say so. If the need is unclear, "what would the money let you do that you cannot do now" usually surfaces it.

## Step 2. Collect the documents in one request

Ask for everything at once, from the list on the [documents page](https://businessloanbroker.ai/agents/documents/): three to six months of business bank statements, two years of business tax returns, year to date P&L and balance sheet, a debt schedule, ownership details, and the product specific items (equipment quote, purchase agreement, invoices). Say why each matters. Accept PDFs and images; the server reads both.

## Step 3. Create the business and upload

Create the business with its legal name, entity type, country and start date, and add the people who own 20% or more. Create the intake application, fetch the contract, then prepare an upload for each document and confirm it. Tag each file with its type so autofill knows what it is reading.

## Step 4. Autofill, then review with the owner

Start autofill and poll until it settles. Walk the owner through the suggestions that drive underwriting: average monthly revenue, average daily balance, NSF count, existing debt payments, ownership percentages. Accept high confidence suggestions, confirm the rest. Fix anything the documents could not answer with `update_answers`.

## Step 5. Check readiness and close the gaps

Call readiness. Relay the missing items in plain words and offer to proceed with matching while the owner finds them. Do not submit an incomplete file; lenders stall on it and the owner loses days.

## Step 6. Match and present the shortlist

Run matching. Present the result as a short table: lender type, product, indicative amount, typical cost, speed, and why it matched. Include the products that did not match and the reason, because owners value knowing what not to waste time on. Recommend two or three to send to, and say why.

## Step 7. Confirm, submit, and set expectations

Say exactly what will be sent and to whom, that approval is not guaranteed, that the owner can stop here, and that some lenders may run a hard credit inquiry at offer stage and will say so first. On a clear yes, update selections and submit. Then tell the owner what happens next: lender review, possible stip requests, offers, and typical timing by product from the [timing guide](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/how-long-it-takes/).

## Step 8. Track and relay

Check deals for messages and terms. Relay stip requests the same day. When offers arrive, explain them side by side in plain words: total cost of capital, payment and cadence, term, fees, prepayment terms, guarantees. Do not recommend signing anything the owner has not read. Done means the owner has chosen an offer or decided to wait, and knows why.

## Questions and answers
**What if the owner has no documents ready?**

Run matching on what you have to give an early read, then list exactly what to gather. Most owners can export bank statements and tax returns in ten minutes once they know which ones.

**Should I submit to every matched lender?**

No. Two or three well chosen lenders produce comparable offers without the owner fielding six calls. More is reasonable for unusual files where fit is uncertain.

**What do I do with a decline?**

Read the reason from the deal, explain it, and check whether a different product fits. The why loans get denied guide covers the common reasons and fixes.
